Dewey's Decimal Classification

DDC devised by Melvil Dewey in 1876. The publication of a 42-pages pamphlet entitled A classification and subject index for cataloguing and arranging the books and pamphlets of a library. This was the first edition, which consisted of 12 pages of preparatory matter, 12 pages of tables and 18'pages of index, a total of 42 pages. It contained nearly 1000 classes.

· Forest Press has been the publisher of DDC since 1911 a Division of OCLC Online
· Computer Library Centre
· Edition 19 of DDC had been printed from the computer tape in 1979
· DDC 21 appeared in two formats: In print; and Dewey for Windows, a Microsoft Windows TMbased version (released in August 1996) (CD version) Latter is known as Dewey for Windows (DfW)

Notation

* Arabic numerals are used to represent each class in the DDC
* The first digit in each three-digit number represents the main class. Eg., 500 represents science.
* The second digit in each three-digit number indicates the division. For example, 500 are used for general works on the sciences, 510 for mathematics, 520 for astronomy, 530 for physics.
* The third digit in each three-digit number indicates the section
* A decimal point, or dot, follows the third digit in a class number
* The dot is not a decimal point in the mathematical sense, but a psychological pause to break the monotony of numerical digits and to ease the transcription and copying of the class number.

Principle of Hierarchy

* Structural hierarchy means that all topics (aside from the ten main classes) are part of all the broader topics above them
* Notational hierarchy is expressed by length of notation
* Class a work dealing with interrelated subjects with the subject that is being acted upon. This is called the rule of application
* If two subjects receive equal treatment, and are not used to introduce or explain one another, class the work with the subject whose number comes first in the DDC schedules. This is called the first-of-two rule.
* Class a work on three or more subjects that are all subdivisions of a broader subject in the first higher number that includes them all (unless one subject is treated more fully than the others). This is called the rule of three.
* Subdivisions beginning with zero should be avoided if there is a choice between 0 and 1–9 at the same point in the hierarchy of the notation. Similarly, subdivisions beginning with 00 should be avoided when there is a choice between 00 and 0. This is called the rule of zero.

How DDC 23 Is Arranged

DDC 23 is composed of the following major parts in four volumes:

Volume 1
(A) New Features in Edition 23: A brief explanation of the special features and changes in DDC 23
(B) Introduction: A description of the DDC and how to use it
(C) Glossary: Short definitions of terms used in the DDC
(D) Index to the Introduction and Glossary
(E) Manual: A guide to the use of the DDC that is made up primarily of extended discussions of problem areas in the application of the DDC. Information in the Manual is arranged by the numbers in the tables and schedules
(F) Tables: Six numbered tables of notation that can be added to class numbers to provide greater specificity
(G) Lists that compare Editions 22 and 23: Re locations and Discontinuations; Comparative and Equivalence Tables; Reused Numbers

Volume 2
(H) DDC Summaries: The top three levels of the DDC
(I) Schedules: The organization of knowledge from 000–599

Volume 3
(J) Schedules: The organization of knowledge from 600–999

Volume 4
(K) Relative Index: An alphabetical list of subjects with the disciplines in which they are treated sub arranged alphabetically under each entry

Table in DDC 23
There are six numbered tables in DDC 23:
T1 Standard Subdivisions
T2 Geographic Areas, Historical Periods, Biography
T3 Subdivisions for the Arts, for Individual Literature, for Specific Literary Forms
T3A Subdivisions for Works by or about Individual Authors
T3B Subdivisions for Works by or about More than One Author
T3C Notation to Be Added Where Instructed in Table 3B, 700.4, 791.4, 808–809
T4 Subdivisions of Individual Languages and Language Families
T5 Ethnic and National Groups
T6 Languages

The Relative Index
The Relative Index is primarily an index to the DDC as a system. It includes most terms found in the schedules and tables, and terms with literary warrant for concepts represented by the schedules and tables

WebDewey® 2.0 is an online version of the complete Dewey Decimal Classification system. Using a standard Web browser, you have unlimited access to an enhanced version of the DDC 23 database. Web Dewey is a subscription based service, Web Dewey is also more than a cataloguing tool it’s a productivity tool as well DDC 23 Errata is a list of corrections to address significant typographical errors in the print edition of DDC
23. Updates to the content of DDC 23 are available in Web Dewey 2.0.

Parentheses or square brackets --Some numbers in the schedules and tables are enclosed in parentheses or square brackets. Numbers and notes in parentheses provide options to standard practice. Numbers in square brackets represent topics that have been relocated or discontinued, or are unassigned. Square brackets are also used for standard subdivision concepts that are represented in another location. Bracketed numbers should never be used.

Hook number: Standard subdivisions are also bracketed under a hook number, that is, a number that has no meaning in itself, but is used to introduce specific examples of a topic. Hook numbers have headings that begin with "Miscellaneous," "Other," or "Specific"; and do not contain add notes, including notes, or class-here notes

Do-not-use notes: Instruct the classifier not to use all or part of the regular standard subdivision notation, but instead to use a special provision or standard subdivision notation at a broader number

See-Manual references in the schedules and tables refer the classifier to the Manual for additional information about a certain number, range of numbers, or choice among numbers
